After the birth

Acupuncture after the birth

The weeks after a birth are mostly about everyone else. A visit with me is an hour that is only yours, in a quiet room with a bolster, a blanket and tea.

People come in for rest, for sleep that comes in pieces, for tight shoulders and a sore back from carrying and feeding, and for a little room to say how things are. I work alongside your midwife or doctor and your postpartum checkups, and I don't promise any change.

  • Side-lying or seated, whatever is comfortable

  • Your support person is welcome

  • Shorter visits if you need to get back

  • Tell me if you are nursing or pumping

A visit, in order

What a visit is like

A visit takes about 50 minutes after the first.

  1. 01

    Step 1: We talk

I ask how you are sleeping and eating, how the birth went if you want to say, and everything you take.

  2. 02

    Step 2: A comfortable position

Side-lying or seated, with pillows and a blanket, and a break whenever you need one.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Needles, then rest

A few fine needles, left in for about 20 minutes. You can doze or just be quiet.

  4. 04

Step 4: Tea and a plan

A cup of tea, a few words on what to watch for at home, and a time for your next visit if you want one.

Before you book

A few things to know

  • What you may feel afterward

Most people feel sleepy or calm. Some have light soreness where a needle was, or a small bruise. Tell me if you feel light-headed and I will help you up slowly.

  • Tell me first

Please say if any of these apply, and tell me about everything you take.

    • Whether you are nursing or pumping, and if you might be pregnant again

    • A cesarean scar or stitches that are still healing

    • Blood thinners, or a bleeding disorder

    • A pacemaker, if electro-stimulation is suggested

    • Lymph node removal on either side, and fear of needles

  • How many visits

Many people come every week or two for a few weeks. It is my plan for you, never a promise, and some people need only one visit.

Being honest

What it doesn't do, and when to see a doctor instead

Acupuncture does not replace your postpartum checkups or any medicine you take. It is not care for low mood or anxiety. If you feel down, anxious or not like yourself for more than a couple of weeks, tell your midwife or doctor.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), any time. In an emergency, call 911.

Call your midwife or doctor first for heavy bleeding, a fever, a red, swollen, painful calf, chest pain or trouble breathing.
